Piano Lessons

There are a lot of piano teaching gimmicks out there. "You can learn to play 100 songs in one week!", or "Don't bother with fingerings, scales, or reading music!" Anyone can play a hundred songs that all sound the same. Anyone can play poorly. Anyone can struggle to learn any other new songs that don't follow the same three chords that were in the first 100 songs.

I take a very practical approach to technique and theory. Just like with language, you learn to speak, and then you learn to read and write. Scales are just patterns that you will use in almost everything you will ever play. The three chords in those 100 songs (and essentially any chord in almost any piece) are built on scales. The more you understand about how scales and chords work, the more you will understand about what it is that you are playing. The better your fingerings and technique, the easier it will be for you to play absolutely everything.

I specialize in adult students, because I appreciate working with people who really want to learn for their own sake. As an adult, you may feel that you will learn more slowly, but this is only partly accurate. You will bring your life experience to the learning process, you will bring adult-sized hands to the keyboard, and you will bring focus and discipline that most younger students do not. I believe that students learn best when they are playing music that they enjoy, so I will help you find music in whatever style and difficulty level is suitable for you. Tell me about your goals in taking lessons, and let's come up with a plan to make your goals happen.
